Hanging Baskets

Our own nursery plants up many thousands of different styles and sizes of hanging baskets each year with many made to our own exclusive recipes. A wide choice of species, that are reliable, colourful and easy to grow and with our experts always on hand for those wanting advice on the best species for a particular position of their hanging basket.

Hanging Baskets have been grown on our Nursery for many years and we have seen their popularity grow each year. Over the past twenty years we have seen many changes to the Hanging Basket as we know it today.

Hanging Baskets

We never had the wide range of species that are available today, with many people just relying on blue Trailing Lobelia and white Alysum to trail over the side of their basket. Most would use a traditional wire hanging basket with either moss to line it or black plastic. Moss is still used today by many, as its traditional look especially when side planted is quite stunning.

The main disadvantage of using moss is that many found it quite difficult to retain the moss round the side of the baske,t while putting in plants and compost took a lot of skill and a lot did often depend on the quality of the moss that was available.

Fibre or Coir liners became easier to use and many felt they retained the moisture better than natural moss, but side planting was not easy although many felt this unnecessary.

About ten years ago the first rattan baskets became available and today we see this type of basket preferred by most. They are now available in a wide range of natural products and have a thin polythene liner which must be punctured before planting to prevent water logging. It is only possible to plant into the top of the basket , although after a few weeks and with the wide range of trailing species available today the basket will soon be covered up.

We have seen a huge demand for water retaining crystals and controlled release fertilizer which are essential to produce the best hanging baskets. I would recommend planting about six plants into a 14" round hanging basket, so with such a limited amount of compost for so many plant,s regular feeding is a must.

Hanging BasketsFertilizer can be applied by using a controlled release fertilizer like Osmocote. Aklternatively a water soluble fertilizer like Miricle Grow or Phostrogen can be applied through a watering can or hose pipe.

Removing dead flowers is also very important to stimulate new growth and so allow new buds to form and eventually flower.

Hanging BasketChoice of species is a very personal thing and with many people now choosing to colour theme their garden each year the choice is vast.

Most species thrive in the sun although for direct south elevation hanging baskets watering will be at least once a day when it is hot so using species like Pelargonium Peltatum or Trailing Geraniums as they are commonly known, will cope superbly with these conditions.

If you have a shady or north facing elevation using Trailing Fuchsia or Trailing Begonias are two of my favourites.

Hanging BasketAt Newbridge Nurseries we have the widest choice you will find anywhere of hanging basket plants with experts on hand to offer any advice you might need. Try to be adventurous as some of the new introductions by breeders are superb and have been bred for weather tolerance and longevity in flowering, something we are all looking for.

Generally Pests and Disease are not a problem once the hanging basket has become established but should you find any greenfly or powdery mildew on susceptible species a quick spray with the right pesticide or fungicide will soon rid you of the problem.

Hanging BasketsWe plant up many thousands of Hanging baskets on our Nursery for those who do not wish to plant up their own using only the most reliable and colourful species.

We plant up different colour themes to suit all tastes and varying sizes, although my preference is for a minimum of 14" diameter hanging basket, as these will perform much better and are easier to look after.

Single species hanging baskets are preferred by some, while others prefer many different species planted into one basket that compliment each other. Here are just a few examples of what can be achieved with just a little care and devotion.
