At Newbridge Nurseries we have the experts to explain the many lawn treatments that are available to the consumer today.
Whether you are sowing seed, laying turf, over seeding, feeding, weeding, trying to eradicate moss or simply wanting to improve a tired lawn, you will find we have the best tools and products here at Newbridge.
Scotts Lawn Products have been used successfully for many years and by following a few simple instructions you can turn a tired and hungry moss laden lawn into a revitalised green outdoor living space to be proud off.
From as early as March work can be started to bring your lawn up to looking it’s very best by using a Lawn Sand for the worst effected areas of Moss. Depending on the size of your lawn scraping out the dead moss after a couple of weeks when it turns black with anything from a simple moss rake to a mechanical scarifyer is a good start. This process can also be repeated in the Autumn.
April is traditionally a good time to apply one of the many weed and feed treatments, that are available on the market today. I would recommend that to avoid scorching they are best applied 3 or 4 days before a rain is forecast. If the rain does not appear, be ready with the hose pipe or watering can!!
Evergreen Complete is one of the most popular and reliable products that will Weed, Feed and Mosskill you lawn in one application. We usually have this available in various sizes depending on the size of your lawn. This granular treatment is easily applied through an Easy Green Spreader which you can purchase separately for large areas, or the 100sqm size comes with a hand help spreader on the packaging, which is very useful.
Alternatively Evergreen Complete is available as a soluble treatment which is easy to apply through a watering can. Other very good soluble products are Evergreen Weed and Feed and Maxicrop Moss Killer and Lawn Tonic. This is again is applied through a watering can which is not therefore so reliant on a rain after the application. These soluble treatments are especially useful for smaller lawns.
Scotts premium product used by professionals is called Lawn Builder and one that is less likely to cause scorching making it invaluable in dry conditions. Here you will need to decide which of the treatments FEED, WEED or control MOSS you require to control most as they come in separate applications. Ideally I would apply the Moss control first followed by the weed control and then the feed, which should result in a spectacular looking lawn.
The Spring is a very good time to treat the weeds in your lawn as they are now becoming active after the winter and are in a young and vulnerable state. For heavy infestations of weeds I would recommend using Verdone Extra which is available in a concentrate for large areas or a Ready to Use Spray Gun, which is ideal for spot treatment. This weed killer is specially designed to be sprayed on to your lawn and to kill only the broadleaved weeds and so not harming your lawn.
Seeding a new lawn or overseeding which replaces the dead grasses that happen each year should be done ideally in either the Spring or Autumn. If you are seeding for the first time there are numerous types of grass seed mixes available depending on the finish you are trying to achieve. Generally the more hardwearing Tuffgrass or General Purpose mixes contain ryegrass which is ideal for a back garden where children are continually playing, but if you are looking for a more superior looking finish then the short grass mixes Luxury Lawn will always look better.
Try to prepare the area for seeding before sowing by raking the area and forming a tilth on the surface which will enable you to rake in the grass seed after sowing and give it the best possible chance of germinating. Covering small areas with fleece protection material will help to keep in the moisture in and speed germination even further. Remembering to keep the seed moist at all times until it germinates will give the best results. If you have any uneven areas these are best levelled first with Lawn Top Dressing which is a mixture of high quality topsoil and grit.
Overseeding will replace the dead grasses that are removed by scarifying each year and using a product called Patch Magic is ideal for those bare patches and ideal for anyone with dogs.
If you have either Fusariam or Redthread in your lawn this can be treated with Bayer Lawn Disease Control.
